During this time, China saw massive growth in land, population, and trade. It also faced huge challenges, like Western invasions, rebellion at home, and pressure to modernize.<\/p><h2 data-start=\"172\" data-end=\"214\">Origins and Rise of the Qing Dynasty<\/h2><p data-start=\"216\" data-end=\"414\">Before the Qing ruled China, they were a powerful group of tribes from the northeast\u2014known as the <strong data-start=\"314\" data-end=\"326\">Jurchens<\/strong>, later called the <strong data-start=\"345\" data-end=\"356\">Manchus<\/strong>. Their rise began with a strong leader named <strong data-start=\"402\" data-end=\"413\">Nurhaci<\/strong>.<\/p><h3 data-start=\"416\" data-end=\"461\">From Jurchens to Qing: How It All Began<\/h3><p data-start=\"462\" data-end=\"683\">In <strong data-start=\"465\" data-end=\"473\">1616<\/strong>, Nurhaci founded a new state called the <strong data-start=\"514\" data-end=\"527\">Later Jin<\/strong>. He united many tribes and built a strong military system called the <strong data-start=\"597\" data-end=\"614\">Eight Banners<\/strong>, which organized soldiers and their families for war and settlement.<\/p><p data-start=\"685\" data-end=\"1005\">After Nurhaci&#8217;s death, his son <strong data-start=\"716\" data-end=\"730\">Hong Taiji<\/strong> took over. In <strong data-start=\"745\" data-end=\"753\">1636<\/strong>, he renamed the country <strong data-start=\"778\" data-end=\"788\">&#8220;Qing&#8221;<\/strong> and began creating a real government, blending Manchu and Chinese traditions.
