high-speed rail should be the first option you compare\u2014but it is not automatically the best choice. A useful rule is to look at the fastest practical direct train, then compare the complete door-to-door journey rather than the train time against the flight time alone.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Under about 4\u20135 hours by direct high-speed rail: the train is usually the stronger choice.<\/li>\n<li>About 5\u20137 hours: compare both options carefully, including station or airport transfers, waiting time, baggage and arrival location.<\/li>\n<li>About 7\u20138 hours or longer: flying becomes increasingly attractive, especially on cross-country routes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">Train travel is often easier with normal tourist luggage, children and multi-city itineraries because you avoid airport-style check-in and baggage-claim processes. Flying becomes more useful when rail would consume most of a travel day, when an airport fits your itinerary particularly well, or when you are connecting to another flight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">These are planning heuristics, not fixed rules. Scheduled rail or flight time is only one part of that calculation.<\/p>\n\n<h3 id=\"what-a-train-journey-really-includes\">What a Train Journey Really Includes<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"p1\">A typical high-speed rail journey includes:<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n<li>hotel to railway station;<\/li>\n<li>time to enter the station and pass security;<\/li>\n<li>passport and ticket verification when required;<\/li>\n<li>waiting and boarding;<\/li>\n<li>the train journey itself;<\/li>\n<li>arrival at the destination station;<\/li>\n<li>station to your next hotel or attraction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"p1\">Foreign travelers can register with a passport on the China Railway 12306 English website or app. Identity verification can be completed through the system or by uploading the passport information page for manual review. Once verified, foreign passengers can buy tickets online using supported Chinese or foreign bank cards and mobile payment methods.<sup>[1]<\/sup><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"p1\">The original passport used to buy the ticket also functions as the core identity document for station entry and boarding. In normal electronic-ticket travel, there is no need to exchange the booking for a traditional paper ticket simply to board.<sup>[1]<\/sup><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"p1\">Do not assume every high-speed rail station is downtown. Beijing South and Shanghai Hongqiao are well integrated with their urban transport networks, but many Chinese cities also have newer high-speed stations in suburban districts. Check the exact station rather than judging by the city name alone.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"p1\">For many ordinary domestic journeys, arriving with a reasonable buffer before departure is sufficient, but there is no single arrival time that fits every station, holiday period or traveler. A flight spends far less time in the air, but Beijing and Shanghai both have multiple airports and multiple railway stations, so the answer depends heavily on the exact pair you are using.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"p1\">For a central-city itinerary using Beijing South and Shanghai Hongqiao, rail can be extremely competitive door to door.
