Yes. China high-speed rail is one of the easiest ways for international travelers to move between major cities, provided you prepare four things: verify your passport, check the full station name, allow enough time for security and boarding, and choose a sensible seat class.
The hardest part of using China’s high-speed rail is rarely the train itself. The common failures happen before boarding: a traveler chooses the wrong station in a multi-station city, enters a passport name incorrectly, or underestimates the walk from security to the gate.
This guide focuses on that practical journey from search to station exit. It explains train numbers, useful tourist routes, booking channels, seat classes, luggage, boarding and recovery when plans change. For a broader overview of airports, trains and local connections, start with our China transportation guide.
China ended 2025 with 50,400 km of operating high-speed railway, according to the national railway operator.[1] The network links nearly every major tourist city, but not every train shown in a search result is a high-speed service.
The first letter of a train number is the fastest practical clue. It describes the service category, not a guaranteed speed or a specific train model.
| Prefix | 서비스 | Typical Role | What Travelers Should Know |
|---|---|---|---|
| G | High-speed EMU | Major trunk routes, often up to 300–350 km/h | Usually the fastest daytime choice and often the most expensive standard service. |
| D | EMU | Trunk, regional and selected overnight sleeper routes, commonly up to 200–250 km/h | May be slower than G but can offer useful stops, fares or overnight options. |
| C | Intercity EMU | Short regional links within major city clusters | Useful for routes such as Beijing–Tianjin and parts of the Greater Bay Area. |
Fuxing and CRH describe train families rather than booking categories. You do not need to filter by model unless a particular facility matters to you. G, D and C services can also share parts of the same line, so the prefix alone does not reveal every stop or the exact operating speed.
Static maps are useful for orientation but age quickly as lines open and timetables change. Treat any network map as a broad picture of the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region, Yangtze River Delta, Greater Bay Area, Chengdu–Chongqing region and major inland hubs. Use the official 12306 search for the actual date you plan to travel.
A line on a map does not guarantee a direct train between two cities. Some pairs require a transfer, and different trains may use different stations in the same city. Search by exact departure and arrival station, then compare the complete route and arrival time.
The ranges below are planning estimates, not promises. Timetables can change, and a slightly slower train may fit your hotel location better.
| 구간 | Typical Fast Journey | Travel Use |
|---|---|---|
| Beijing South → Shanghai Hongqiao | About 4.5–5.5 hours | Connects the core 베이징 · 상하이 city routes. |
| 베이징서역 → 시안북역 | 약 4~5시간 | Main rail link for adding 시안 and the Terracotta Army. |
| 시안북역 → 청두동역 | 약 3~4시간 | Connects the classic history route with 청두. |
| Shanghai Hongqiao → Hangzhou East | About 45–70 minutes | Easy access to 항저우 for a short side trip. |
| Chengdu East → Chongqing North or Chongqing West | About 1.25–2 hours | Frequent link to 충칭; confirm which Chongqing station serves your train. |
| Guangzhou South → Shenzhen North | About 30–50 minutes | Fast connection between 광저우 · 선전. |
| Guangzhou South or Shenzhen North → Hong Kong West Kowloon | About 45–90 minutes, depending on origin | Cross-boundary route to 홍콩 with immigration procedures. |
For the busiest trunk route, our Beijing–Shanghai distance and transport comparison adds the airport and city-transfer context that a timetable alone cannot show.
Choosing the wrong station is one of the costliest mistakes a first-time traveler can make. “Beijing” is not a single rail terminal: Beijing South commonly handles Shanghai and Tianjin services, while Beijing West is important for Xi’an and many westbound or southbound routes. Beijing Railway Station is a third location.
The same warning applies to Shanghai Hongqiao, Shanghai Station and Shanghai South; to Chengdu East and other Chengdu stations; and especially to Chongqing North, Chongqing West and Chongqing East. Transferring across a large city after discovering the error may take longer than the time remaining before departure.
Second Class is the default choice for most tourists. A typical carriage uses a 3+2 layout, gives every passenger an assigned seat and normally has an overhead rack. Facilities vary by train generation, so do not choose a class solely because a photograph shows a particular outlet or table.
| 등급 | Common Layout | 추천 대상 | Practical Judgment |
|---|---|---|---|
| 이급 | 3+2 | Most trips, especially under four hours | Best value for the majority of independent travelers. |
| 일등 | 2+2 | Longer journeys or travelers wanting more width and legroom | A meaningful comfort upgrade without Business Class pricing. |
| 비즈니스 클래스 | Often 1+2 or a smaller premium cabin | Long trips, rest and high budgets | Seats may recline close to flat, but the price difference can be large. |
On many trains, A and F are window positions, while C and D are aisle positions; the exact diagram appears during booking. Premium First and sleeper products exist on selected trains, but they are not standard across the network.
Foreign travelers can buy tickets after identity verification through the 12306 English website or app, at a station, or through a legitimate third-party platform. Official guidance says 12306 and station ticket offices can accept Chinese or foreign bank cards, mobile payments and, at counters, RMB cash, although the exact options displayed can vary by channel and location.[2]
| Channel | 주요 장점 | Main Tradeoff | 추천 대상 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Official 12306 website or app | No booking commission; official change, refund and waitlist tools | Registration and passport verification take setup | Travelers taking several trains or wanting direct control. |
| Reputable third-party platform | Familiar English interface and international-card flow | Service fees; after-sales requests normally stay with that seller | Short trips or travelers who cannot complete 12306 setup. |
| 역 매표 창구 | Staff can handle identity or ticketing problems in person | Queues, language uncertainty and possible sellouts | Last-minute plans and verification failures. |
For screen-by-screen registration, passenger setup and payment help, use our separate 12306 guide for foreign travelers. The railway operator is not responsible for ticketing problems on unrelated websites, so keep the seller name and order details when booking through an intermediary.[3]
At the station, carry the original passport used for the booking. Some automatic gates read foreign passports; others do not. If the gate rejects the document, move to the staffed channel instead of repeatedly scanning it.
As of August 2026, tickets generally go on sale 15 days before departure, including the travel date. The exact release time depends on the departure station rather than one national daily time. Current cross-boundary guidance also lists international credit cards among 12306 payment options.[4]
A split ticket can rescue a sold-out route, but leave enough transfer time and confirm that both trains use the same station. Two separately purchased tickets do not turn a tight connection into a protected transfer.
Large stations may provide a staffed priority or assistance channel. Ask an information desk early if you need wheelchair help, more boarding time or support with luggage; service levels vary by station.
The current mainland rule allows most adult passengers 20 kg of free cabin luggage. On EMU trains, each item may have a maximum combined length, width and height of 130 cm, and an individual item may not exceed 20 kg. Foldable wheelchairs used by travelers with disabilities are outside the normal free-luggage limit.[3]
Small cases and backpacks fit on the overhead rack. Larger suitcases should go in the designated space at the end of the carriage or another marked luggage area. Even a compliant case can be difficult to place during a holiday rush, so board promptly and keep valuables with you. Check the current prohibited-and-restricted-items list before carrying aerosols, alcohol, knives, tools or unusual batteries.
Compare the whole hotel-to-hotel journey, not the advertised train or flight duration. A city-center station, simpler security process and shorter boarding buffer often make rail faster when the complete trip is about five hours or less.
Weather disruption, baggage rules and the location of your next hotel also matter. Our detailed high-speed rail versus plane comparison helps with that decision.
| 문제 | Best Immediate Action | 월 중순에 여행한다면 |
|---|---|---|
| Train sold out | Join the 12306 waitlist; compare later trains, correct nearby stations or a sensible transfer. | Buying an impossible same-city transfer just because one segment has seats. |
| Wrong station | Check real cross-city travel time immediately. Change the ticket if you cannot reach the correct station safely. | Assuming a taxi can overcome distance, congestion and the boarding cutoff. |
| Missed train | Go to a staffed ticket window and ask about an eligible same-day change; current rules and availability control the result. | Discarding the booking without asking, or buying a duplicate before checking options. |
| Railway delay or cancellation | Follow 12306 notices and staff instructions for the available change or refund process. | Leaving the station without documenting the disruption or checking the official option. |
| Passport mismatch | Visit the staffed identity or ticketing counter with the original passport and order details. | Continuing to retry an automatic gate. |
| Voluntary change or refund | Use the original sales channel and review the fee shown before confirming. | Assuming every change is free or that 12306 can manage a third-party order. |
China Railway allows one ticket change subject to seat availability, while timing and the new travel date can affect fees. Refund charges also rise closer to departure, so read the current terms displayed for your order before confirming.[3]
China high-speed rail is straightforward once the administrative details are right. Verify your passport, book the exact station, choose Second Class unless you value extra space, arrive with a realistic buffer and keep the original passport accessible. Those habits prevent the two biggest failures: going to the wrong terminal and reaching the gate too late.
Most G trains run during the day rather than overnight. Selected long-distance routes use D-series overnight sleeper services, but departures and operating days are limited. Search your exact date in 12306 instead of assuming a sleeper runs every night.
Yes. Cross-boundary trains serve Hong Kong West Kowloon. Passport holders complete real-name checking, security and immigration before boarding; MTR says the process commonly takes about 30–45 minutes and advises extra time for passport users and busy periods.[5]
Yes. Your booking shows a carriage and seat number. The system may place travelers in one order together when space permits, but adjacent seats are not guaranteed on a busy train.
Yes. Children older than 6 and younger than 14 qualify for child discount tickets under the current mainland rule. One child under 6 may travel free with each fare-paying adult without a separate seat, but the child must be declared with valid identity information.[3]
No. Smoking is prohibited throughout EMU trains, including the toilets and spaces between carriages. Do not use an electronic cigarette onboard either.[3]
Some large stations provide priority counters, boarding assistance and wheelchairs, but facilities are not identical everywhere. Contact 12306 or the departure station in advance, arrive early and ask the information desk where the staffed assistance channel is located.[3]
