Yes. Three calendar days are enough for Guilin’s essential first-time route if you arrive before 10:00 on Day 1, leave after 19:00 on Day 3, and stay one night in Guilin and one night in Yangshuo.
The best route is Guilin city → Li River cruise → Yangshuo, with no return to Guilin unless your departure requires it.
The difficult part of planning กุ้ยหลิน ที่ กว่างซี is not choosing karst scenery. It is connecting an airport or station, an out-of-town cruise pier, two hotels and a final departure without losing half the trip to transfers.
This itinerary treats the Li River cruise as one-way transportation as well as sightseeing. That removes backtracking and distinguishes it from short sightseeing rafts around Yangdi and Xingping. It also explains what to cut when your arrival is late, the river changes operation, or your Day 3 departure is earlier than expected.
Use this plan only if the following conditions match your trip:
If these assumptions do not fit, compare the alternatives in How Many Days Do You Need in Guilin?
| วัน | เมืองฐาน | แผนหลัก | Transfer | Overnight | Book first |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| วันที่ 1 | กุ้ยหลิน | Elephant Trunk Hill and city lakes; Reed Flute Cave only if time allows | Airport or station to central Guilin | Central Guilin | Check any current Elephant Hill reservation control |
| วันที่ 2 | Guilin → Yangshuo | Full one-way Li River cruise | Hotel → Mopanshan or Zhujiang pier → Longtoushan Wharf | เมืองหยางซั่ว | ล่องเรือแม่น้ำหลี่ |
| วันที่ 3 | เมืองหยางซั่ว | One Yulong River raft route and a short countryside loop | Yangshuo to railway station, KWL or Guilin | — | Yulong River raft, then departure transport |
The table shows the trip’s movement logic. It does not mean every optional activity must remain in the schedule.
Go first to your hotel near Elephant Trunk Hill or the Two Rivers and Four Lakes area. Leave your main luggage and keep the afternoon flexible until you know how much time the arrival process has consumed.
Make Elephant Trunk Hill the non-negotiable stop. Allow about 60–90 minutes for the riverside viewpoints, photos and an unhurried circuit. The official tourism platform currently lists the attraction as free, but real-name reservations or crowd controls may still apply on busy dates. Check the official mini-program before arrival and do not buy a supposed standalone admission ticket from a street seller.[6]
Add Reed Flute Cave only if you reached the city early and still have at least three comfortable hours before dinner. It requires a separate cross-city transfer, a timed visit and a return to the center. If your flight or train is late, deleting the cave preserves the best part of the evening instead of turning Day 1 into a race.
Around dusk, walk through the central lake district, see the Sun and Moon Pagodas from outside, and continue toward East-West Alley or Xiaoyao Tower. The lakeside walk is the easiest free evening plan. The Two Rivers and Four Lakes sightseeing boat is a paid alternative, not an essential second cruise before the much more important Li River journey.
For dinner, try Guilin rice noodles away from the most tourist-facing shopfronts. A common local approach is to eat the noodles dry-mixed first and add broth later. The site’s Guilin food guide covers more dishes without overloading this itinerary.
Day 1 cutoffs are simple:
Day 2 is the route’s anchor. Book the full star-rated cruise in advance and recheck the assigned pier, sailing time and operating notice the evening before. Official tickets are sold through the Li River ticketing service; schedules and holiday booking windows can change.[2]
Three-star boats normally use Mopanshan Passenger Port, while four-star services use Zhujiang Passenger Port. Both piers are outside central Guilin. The official scenic-area guidance places the boarding ports about 28 km from downtown and estimates 40–50 minutes by road, while advising passengers to leave the city about 90 minutes before departure to cover traffic, ticket collection and security.[1] Do not tell a driver only “Li River pier.” Show the exact Chinese pier name on your booking.
Choose a three-star boat for value or a four-star boat for a roomier onboard experience and, on some sailings, a better meal arrangement. Both travel through the same main Li River landscape. Facilities, meal inclusion and seat assignment vary, so compare the exact sailing rather than assuming every boat in a class is identical.
The main cruise is approximately four hours and runs one way from Guilin toward Yangshuo. Along the route, you pass Nine Horse Fresco Hill, Yellow Cloth Shoal and the landscape associated with the CNY 20 banknote. The boat passes the Xingping section from the river; it does not give you a normal sightseeing stop in Xingping.
Standard suitcases are commonly accepted on these full-size boats, but storage and handling limits are operator-specific. Confirm unusual or oversized luggage before paying. Keep passports, medication, electronics and valuables with you rather than in a shared luggage area.
After disembarking at Longtoushan Wharf, expect an uneven walk before reaching road transport. A very large suitcase is inconvenient here. Take a taxi or booked transfer to your Yangshuo hotel, check in, and leave the countryside for Day 3.
Keep the evening light: walk briefly around West Street, have dinner and choose no more than one show. Do not add the Yulong River, Ten-Mile Gallery and a performance on the same evening. The cruise day already includes the early pier transfer and several hours on the water.
Start early and choose one Yulong River route. The fuller first-time option is Jinlong Bridge to Jiuxian: the official route covers 6 km, passes nine weirs and ends near Jiuxian village. Jinlong Bridge is about 12 km from Yangshuo county town.[4] Travelers with a tighter departure can use the Shui’edi route, a 3 km section with four weirs ending near Gongnong Bridge; its starting pier is about 6 km from the county town.[5] Practical ride times are roughly 90 minutes for the longer route and 40–60 minutes for the shorter one, but water conditions and dispatching can change them.
Book through the official Yulong River channel and inspect the exact product before paying. The Jinlong Bridge and Shui’edi routes are currently sold by raft, so a solo traveler generally pays the raft price rather than a separate half-seat price. Other official routes use different two-, three- or group-raft formats, which is why “all Yulong rafts are two-person boats” is inaccurate.[3] Passenger restrictions and ticket-release procedures can change by route; confirm the current rules if traveling with a young child, during pregnancy, with an older adult or with limited mobility.
After the raft, choose one short land activity:
Set your departure deadline before boarding the raft. Yangshuo Railway Station is near Xingping, not beside West Street. From central Yangshuo, allow about 45–60 minutes by private car in normal conditions, or roughly 75–100 minutes when relying on public transport and waiting. Add another 45–60 minutes at the station. Search the exact departure station and train on the official 12306 system.[8]
For KWL, the road journey from Yangshuo commonly takes around 90 minutes before airport check-in and security. For a 19:00 flight, leaving central Yangshuo around 15:00–15:30 is a safer planning target than finishing a late-afternoon raft. KWL is about 28 km from central Guilin, and ground transport can slow during busy periods.[7] If your ticket departs from a Guilin railway station, allow for the full road journey back to Guilin plus station time.
These are different products, not interchangeable names for the same ride.
| Decision point | Full Li River star-rated cruise | Yangdi–Xingping sightseeing raft |
|---|---|---|
| การทำงาน | One-way sightseeing transport from Guilin toward Yangshuo | Shorter sightseeing experience within the Li River area |
| Typical duration | About four hours | Usually around 60–90 minutes, depending on product and operation |
| สัมภาระ | Full-size boat; normal suitcases are usually manageable, subject to operator rules | Poor choice for transferring large luggage |
| ระดับสบาย | Covered cabin, seats and toilets; works in a wider range of weather | More exposed to sun, rain, noise and water-level restrictions |
| เหมาะที่สุดสำหรับ | This three-day Guilin-to-Yangshuo route | A Yangshuo- or Xingping-based plan with separate road transport |
The official Li River platform lists star-rated cruises and sightseeing rafts as separate booking categories.[2] For a first visit with one Guilin night and one Yangshuo night, the full cruise is more efficient because it combines the main scenic experience with the city transfer.
Never book or navigate with only the city name. Guilin has several railway stations, and Yangshuo Station is outside central Yangshuo.
| Hub | Where it works best | Realistic planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Guilin Railway Station | Best rail arrival for Elephant Trunk Hill and the central lakes | Usually the simplest city-center connection |
| Guilin North Railway Station | Major high-speed rail hub with many services | Allow roughly 30–45 minutes to a central hotel, plus traffic buffer |
| Guilin West Railway Station | Useful only when its train time is materially better | More peripheral; check the complete hotel transfer before booking |
| KWL airport | Flights into or out of the region | About 28 km from central Guilin; allow roughly 40–70 minutes to the center, then separate airport-processing time.[1] |
| Yangshuo Railway Station | Rail departure after Yangshuo | Near Xingping; allow 45–60 minutes by car or longer by public transport from central Yangshuo |
ใช้ China’s high-speed rail guide for station and boarding basics. If you need foreign-passport registration and ticket steps, continue to How to Buy China Train Tickets. Current train times should always be checked in 12306 rather than copied from an old itinerary.[8]
| กลางคืน | พื้นที่ที่ดีที่สุด | เหตุผลที่แผนนี้ใช้ได้ดี | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Night 1: Guilin | Elephant Trunk Hill or Two Rivers and Four Lakes | Walkable evening, easy luggage drop and practical morning pickup | Central prices can rise on holidays |
| Night 2: Yangshuo | West Street edge | Restaurants and transport are convenient without the worst central noise | Less rural atmosphere |
| Night 2 alternative | Yulong River side | Quiet setting and easier countryside start | Requires a car for West Street and some departure transfers |
Do not put Night 1 in a distant new district merely to save a small amount. Do not book a remote Yulong River guesthouse without confirming how you will reach it from Longtoushan Wharf and leave with luggage on Day 3. For area-by-area tradeoffs, use the full พักที่ไหนในกุ้ยหลิน ของเรา
Water activities depend on navigation and safety decisions. Heavy rain and high water can suspend or alter cruises and rafting; low water can also change the operating section, pier or duration. Check the official notice the day before and again in the morning.
| เงื่อนไข | Likely effect | Better response |
|---|---|---|
| Severe rain or high water | Cruise or raft may be delayed, rerouted or suspended | Follow the operator’s notice; transfer by road if the full cruise cannot run |
| Low water | Route, pier or timing may change | Keep extra time and confirm the exact boarding point |
| Mist or light rain | Lower visibility but atmospheric karst scenery | Continue if the activity remains open; use rain protection |
| Midday heat | Rafting and cycling become tiring | Book an early raft and rest indoors at midday |
| Severe weather on show night | Outdoor performance may be delayed or canceled | Check the same-day notice; do not assume ordinary rain means cancellation |
If the raft is canceled, use a cave or a central Yangshuo activity only when roads and the attraction remain open. If the full Li River cruise is suspended, travel from Guilin to Yangshuo by coach or private car and move a city or cave visit into the vacant time. Do not improvise a tight rail transfer to Yangshuo Station without remembering that the station is near Xingping.
The rule is simple: keep the full Li River cruise and one Yulong River experience. Everything else is removable.
The most realistic three-day Guilin itinerary moves in one direction: central Guilin on Day 1, the full Li River cruise to Yangshuo on Day 2, and one Yulong River countryside session before departure on Day 3.
It works because it uses two hotel bases and avoids returning to Guilin unnecessarily. Arrive early, leave late, verify water operations, and cut optional caves or shows before cutting the two signature river experiences.
Yes, if the three days include an early arrival and late departure. You can combine Guilin’s central landmark, the full Li River cruise and one Yangshuo countryside experience, but not Longji Rice Terraces as well.
Stay one night in each. A central Guilin night supports the city arrival and cruise pickup; a Yangshuo night avoids traveling back after the one-way cruise and gives you an early start for the Yulong River.
Yes. The main star-rated sightseeing cruise travels from the Guilin-side pier to Longtoushan Wharf in Yangshuo and does not operate as a same-boat return journey. It is useful as both sightseeing and a transfer between hotel bases.[1]
Normal suitcases are commonly carried on full-size cruise boats, but storage and size rules can vary by operator and sailing. Confirm oversized luggage in advance, keep valuables with you, and expect uneven ground after disembarking.
Not without weakening the main route. Longji needs a separate day for road transfers and village access, so a four- or five-day trip is a better minimum if the terraces are essential.
It is near Xingping, not near West Street or central Yangshuo. Plan about 45–60 minutes by private car in ordinary conditions and longer when using public transport, then add station check-in time.
Light rain may simply create misty scenery, but severe rain or unsafe water levels can change or stop cruises and rafts. Follow official notices; use a cave or city activity if open, and transfer between Guilin and Yangshuo by road if the full cruise is suspended.
