Quick Answer: Where Should You Stay in Guilin?

For most first-time visitors, the safest overall choice is still the Two Rivers and Four Lakes / Zhengyang Pedestrian Street(正阳步行街) / East-West Alley(东西巷) / central core. Other areas make more sense only if you clearly prioritize landmark views, a quieter stay, or pure transit convenience.

  • Best overall for first-time visitors: Two Rivers and Four Lakes / Zhengyang Pedestrian Street / East-West Alley / central core
  • Best for classic Guilin atmosphere: the same central sightseeing core around Two Rivers and Four Lakes, Zhengyang Pedestrian Street, and East-West Alley
  • Best for landmark sightseeing efficiency: Elephant Trunk Hill / south Two Rivers and Four Lakes side
  • Best for quieter comfort: Qixing Park / east-bank side
  • Best for rail stopovers: Guilin Railway Station first; Guilin North or Guilin West only for pure high-speed-rail logic
  • Best for airport stopovers only: the Liangjiang Airport side, and only for late arrivals or early flights
  • Do not stay far out just because it is cheaper: area logic usually matters more than small hotel score differences

Guilin is not the kind of city where booking any “hotel near downtown” is good enough. Staying around Two Rivers and Four Lakes(两江四湖), Elephant Trunk Hill(象鼻山), Guilin Railway Station(桂林站), Qixing Park(七星公园), or Lingui(临桂) leads to very different stay experiences. The real difference comes from walkability, night views, food access, sightseeing flow, and whether the area works for city sightseeing or only for transit.

For first-time visitors, the key is not finding the highest-rated hotel first, but choosing the right area and then the right hotel inside it. This guide shows which area fits which travel style and which hotels are most worth prioritizing in each key area.

How We Chose the Hotels in This Guide

This guide is built to help readers choose the right part of Guilin first, then shortlist hotels that work well in real trips.

  • No sponsored placements or paid recommendations.
  • Based mainly on real guest ratings and reviews from major Chinese booking platforms.
  • Area fit matters more than tiny review-score differences.
  • We looked for repeated praise and repeated complaints, not just polished listing photos.
  • Hotels were chosen for actual travel usefulness, not just star level or brochure appeal.
  • In Guilin, repeated comments about walkability, night-view convenience, noise, dampness, older facilities, parking, and breakfast value matter a lot.

This is still the safest all-around base for most first-time visitors. Its biggest value is the strongest mix of sightseeing efficiency, night walks, and food convenience.

It works best for first-time visitors and short stays. The tradeoff is simple: holidays get crowded, some street-facing rooms are noisy, and older hotels are still common here.

It works best for short stopovers and railway-led schedules. For a normal 2–3 day Guilin trip, the central core is usually better.

Near Guilin North Railway Station / Guilin West Railway Station

Guilin North Railway Station building at sunset with clear sky - Where to Stay in Guilin: Best Areas & Hotels 2026 - The China Journey
Guilin North Railway Station building at sunset with clear sky

This is a pure high-speed-rail zone. If your trip is built around a late HSR arrival, an early departure, or a one-night transfer, it works. If not, it usually drags the trip down.

It works best for rail stopovers only. The tradeoff is poor sightseeing value, weaker atmosphere, and longer commutes back to the parts of Guilin most visitors actually want to see.

Hotel positioning: mid-range

Best for: practical stopovers, solo travelers, readers who want a simpler and more affordable station stay

Rating: 4.7/5

Cons: limited atmosphere; little value beyond station logic

Verdict: a practical shortlist option if you want a lower-cost HSR overnight without too much risk

Hanting Hotel Guilin West Station(汉庭酒店·桂林西站店)

Hotel positioning: budget

Best for: very budget-conscious travelers, students, short HSR stopovers

Rating: 4.6/5

Price range: about RMB 250–450 per night

Pros: closest airport logic; easier transfers; dependable for short overnight use; lower risk than unknown village-side options

Verdict: the safest airport pick if reducing flight stress matters more than anything else

Jintone Hotel Guilin Airport(精通酒店·桂林两江机场店)

Price range: about RMB 280–450 per night

Cons: still only useful for airport logic; not worth choosing for city sightseeing

Verdict: the best airport-area upgrade choice if you want a more comfortable stop without moving back into the city

How to Think About Where to Stay in Guilin

  • Start by asking whether your trip is mainly built around Guilin’s classic city sights. If yes, the Two Rivers and Four Lakes / Zhengyang Pedestrian Street / East-West Alley core is usually the best choice.
  • Do not treat “staying in Guilin” as one single experience. The central core is best for overall efficiency, the Elephant Trunk Hill side is better for landmark-focused stays, and the Qixing Park side is better for quieter comfort.
  • Choose Guilin Railway Station only when transport timing matters, especially for a late arrival, early departure, or a next-day transfer to Yangshuo or Longji.
  • Treat Guilin North Railway Station, Guilin West Railway Station, and the airport side as function zones only.
  • If you stay only 1–2 nights, the wrong area will noticeably reduce sightseeing efficiency.
  • Area choice usually matters more than a tiny review-score difference.

Where Not to Stay in Guilin for Most Tourists

  • Too-far outer districts are usually a weak fit for a first trip. They may look cheaper, but they make city sightseeing and evening walks much less convenient.
  • Cheap suburban stays often create false savings. Lower room rates can quickly be offset by extra taxis, longer rides, and lost time.
  • Guilin North Railway Station and Guilin West Railway Station should not be used as city-sightseeing bases for most travelers. They work for HSR timing, not for normal Guilin sightseeing.
  • Airport-side stays should not be used as multi-day bases. They only make sense for flight timing.
  • Cheap older hotels repeatedly criticized for noise, dampness, poor maintenance, weak soundproofing, or bad location are usually not worth the lower rate.
  • These areas are not bad. They just do not match what most first-time Guilin visitors need most: smoother sightseeing, easier evenings, and better route efficiency.

Hotel Types in Guilin: What to Expect

In Guilin, hotel expectations should follow area logic more than star level.

In the Two Rivers and Four Lakes / East-West Alley core, you get the widest mix of chain hotels, design stays, and older properties. This is the strongest overall base for city sightseeing, but core-location pricing is clear.

Around Elephant Trunk Hill and the south lake side, the stay leans more toward views and evening walks. Some hotels offer direct landmark or river-facing rooms, which often come with a noticeable premium. It works well for scenic stays but is slightly less balanced than the main core.

On the Qixing Park / east-bank side, the feel is quieter and more relaxed. Rooms can be more spacious, and the stay is generally calmer, but nightlife and dining density are weaker.

Near Guilin Railway Station, hotels are mostly practical and transit-friendly, suitable for short stays. North and West railway stations are even more function-first, built around high-speed rail, not sightseeing. The airport side is purely for flight timing.

Homestays and boutique stays exist across Guilin, especially in scenic areas. They can be memorable, but for most first-time visitors, a well-located hotel with stable service and easier access is usually the safer choice.

How Much Should You Budget for Staying in Guilin?

Budget level

Typical nightly range

What to expect

Best-fit areas

Budget

RMB 150–300

Clean basic rooms, smaller space, simple facilities, often in transit or back-street locations

Guilin Railway Station area, edge of central districts

Mid-range

RMB 300–550

Good balance of location, comfort, and reliability; newer chains and practical design hotels

Two Rivers and Four Lakes, Elephant Trunk Hill side, Qixing Park

Upper-mid / Comfort

RMB 550–900

Better hardware, stronger service, some view rooms, more stable overall stay quality

Central core, select scenic or river-view properties

Luxury

RMB 900+

High-end hotels, resort-style stays, landmark or lake views, stronger privacy and experience

Premium central locations, scenic lakeside hotels

Guilin is generally more affordable than China’s top-tier cities, but the real price gap comes from area, season, and whether you are paying for a landmark or river view. Public holidays and peak travel periods can raise prices quickly, especially in the central core. For most travelers, a mid-range budget is already enough for a well-located and comfortable stay. View rooms—especially those facing Elephant Trunk Hill—often carry a clear premium.

For a broader travel spending benchmark, see Cost to Travel in China.

Practical Tips for Choosing Where to Stay in Guilin

  • Lock in the area first, then choose the hotel. In Guilin, location shapes most of the trip.
  • Do not rely on labels like “near Two Rivers and Four Lakes” or “near Elephant Trunk Hill.” Check the exact position and walking routes.
  • In older central districts, check if the building is older, whether rooms face busy streets, and whether luggage access is easy.
  • For view hotels, decide if the view is worth the price. Landmark-facing rooms can cost significantly more.
  • Staying near Guilin Railway Station, North/West stations, or the airport is fine for transit, but usually not for sightseeing.
  • Night views, evening walks, dinner access, and breakfast convenience directly affect stay value in Guilin.
  • Book early for peak seasons. Core areas and popular hotels fill quickly and prices rise fast.
  • Families should prioritize walkability, safe streets, and nearby food options, not just hotel ratings.
  • Transport convenience is not just about distance to a station—check how easy it is to reach Two Rivers and Four Lakes, Elephant Trunk Hill, and East-West Alley.
  • Focus on recent reviews mentioning noise, cleanliness, maintenance, air conditioning, hot water, dampness, parking, and soundproofing—these matter more than photos.

It also helps to review broader China Travel Tips before locking in your stay.

FAQs About Where to Stay in Guilin

Where is the best area to stay in Guilin for first-time visitors?

For most first-time visitors, the best area is still the Two Rivers and Four Lakes / Zhengyang Pedestrian Street / East-West Alley central core. It gives you the strongest overall balance of walkability, food access, night views, and city-sightseeing efficiency. It is usually the least risky base for a short first trip.

For most travelers, Two Rivers and Four Lakes is the better all-around choice, while the Elephant Trunk Hill side is better for landmark-focused stays. Stay in the main central core if you want easier evenings, more food choices, and a smoother overall city stay. Stay near Elephant Trunk Hill if direct landmark access and view value matter more to you.

Yes, it is one of the most practical places to stay in Guilin. It gives you central-city atmosphere, easy access to food and walking streets, and strong convenience for first-time sightseeing. The tradeoff is that it can be busy, noisy, and more expensive on popular dates.

Yes, but mainly for travelers who want a quieter and more relaxed stay. The Qixing Park side works well for families and slower itineraries. It is less ideal if you want to walk everywhere or keep night food and city activity close at hand.

Only if your trip is strongly shaped by train timing. It is a useful choice for late arrival, early departure, or a quick transfer to Yangshuo or Longji the next day. For a normal 2–3 day Guilin city trip, the central sightseeing core is usually a better base.

Usually only for high-speed-rail convenience. They can make sense if you arrive late, leave early, or only need a simple overnight stop. They are much weaker as city-sightseeing bases because they add commuting time and take you away from Guilin’s main walking and evening areas.

That depends on why you are staying. If you want one short sightseeing-focused stop, stay in the Two Rivers and Four Lakes / East-West Alley core. If the night is mainly for a train connection, stay near Guilin Railway Station. If it is purely for a flight schedule, then the airport side is the practical answer.

Budget hotels often start around RMB 150–300, solid mid-range stays usually fall around RMB 300–550, and better comfort hotels often run from RMB 550–900. Guilin is usually friendlier in price than China’s top-tier cities, but scenic rooms and holiday periods can raise rates clearly. Landmark-facing rooms often cost more than standard city rooms.

For most visitors, the most convenient sightseeing area is still the Two Rivers and Four Lakes / Zhengyang Pedestrian Street / East-West Alley central core. It gives you the best balance of walking, dining, evening activity, and access to Guilin’s best-known city sights. Other areas can be quieter or more scenic, but they are usually less balanced overall.

Only for flight logic. It can be worth it if you land very late, leave very early, or just need a short airport overnight. For normal Guilin sightseeing, it is usually the wrong choice because it has almost no city-tour value.
