What Exactly Is Zhangjiajie National Forest Park?

The names are confusing because travel websites often use Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and Wulingyuan interchangeably. Technically, Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is one part of the larger Wulingyuan core scenic area, together with Suoxiyu, Tianzi Mountain and Yangjiajie. In practical trip planning, the four-day Wulingyuan ticket is the pass visitors mean when they talk about a forest-park ticket.

Wulingyuan was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1992. Its protected landscape covers about 26,400 hectares and contains more than 3,000 quartz-sandstone pillars and peaks, many more than 200 meters high, as well as ravines, streams, caves and natural bridges.^[1]

Yuanjiajie, Tianzi Mountain and Yangjiajie occupy the high scenic platform; Golden Whip Stream and Ten-Mile Gallery sit in the lower valleys. Yuanjiajie (袁家界) is the first priority for most visitors. Its compact walkway links Mihun Terrace, the First Bridge Under Heaven and the pillar promoted locally as Hallelujah Mountain. This is the scenery most travelers associate with the film Avatar, although the park should be described as Avatar-associated landscape rather than a filming location.

Tianzi Mountain (天子山) offers broader panoramas around Imperial Writing Brush Peaks and Fairy Presenting Flowers. A mountain-top shuttle normally links it with Yuanjiajie. Yangjiajie (杨家界) is quieter and more rugged; some branches involve steep steps and should be treated as an optional addition, not a default first-day stop.

Valley Areas: Golden Whip Stream, Ten-Mile Gallery and Huangshi Village

Golden Whip Stream (金鞭溪) is the main low-level walking route. The trail is gentler than the mountain paths, with forest, water and close views of the pillars. You do not need to walk the whole valley: a two- to three-hour section gives most visitors a substantially different experience from the mountain viewpoints.

Ten-Mile Gallery (十里画廊) is a short, easy valley excursion with an optional sightseeing train. Huangshi Village (黄石寨) is a separate elevated viewpoint reached from near the South Gate, usually by cableway. Its panoramas can be rewarding, but they overlap with Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain enough that a first-time visitor with only two days can skip it.

Which Entrance Should You Use?

The ticket is valid at five official ticket stations, but the gates are not interchangeable in practical terms. The official ticket page lists East, South, West, North and Middle gates.^[2]

The East Gate is the safest default because it is beside Wulingyuan Town and connects efficiently with the main internal transport. The South Gate is useful for Golden Whip Stream. Entering one gate and leaving another can save backtracking, but only if you know how you will return to your hotel.

Reservation rules can require you to select both a gate and an entry period. During busy periods, repeat entry may also need a new time-slot reservation. Check the official booking platform before each visit instead of assuming a four-day pass guarantees entry at any time.

Tickets, Reservations and What the Pass Includes

Entrance Pass, Validity and Re-entry

As of August 2026, the official Wulingyuan ticket page lists the following prices:^[2]

The optional insurance charge is RMB 3. Children under 14, adults aged 65 or over and several other protected groups can receive free admission with valid documents, but internal transport is not automatically free. Visitors aged 14 to under 18, adults aged 60 to under 65 and eligible full-time students receive reduced admission. Check how the current transport concession applies to a foreign document before payment.

The official Zhangjiajie Yijiyou (张家界一机游) mini-program is the main booking channel listed by the scenic area. Foreign visitors should enter the same passport details they will use at the gate and carry the original passport. If the mini-program cannot process the document, use the visitor-service desk or a booking platform that supports foreign passports. Reservations are time-sensitive, especially in summer and during Chinese public holidays.

Extra-Cost Rides: Bailong Elevator, Cableways and Mini Train

The standard RMB 236 pass does not include cableways, the Bailong Elevator or the Ten-Mile Gallery train. The published August 2026 reference fares below are single-ride adult prices and should be checked again when booking.

Combination products for the three cableways and Bailong Elevator also exist, but a bundle is useful only when its included rides match your actual route. The provincial government describes four-ride and multi-ride products in addition to buying each ride separately.^[3]

Best Routes Through Zhangjiajie National Forest Park

Routes are not permanent. Weather, repairs and crowd controls can interrupt a road or change which gate serves a scenic area. An official reopening notice has previously assigned different routes to different gates because links near Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain were temporarily unavailable.^[5] Confirm the current route map the day before entering.

One-Day Route: Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain

This is the strongest one-day route for a first visit. Start early, keep Yangjiajie optional and do not add a long Golden Whip Stream walk.

1. Enter through the East Gate near opening time and take the shuttle toward the Bailong Elevator area.
2. Ride the Bailong Elevator to the mountain level. Allow 30–60 extra minutes for queues in busy periods.
3. Walk the main Yuanjiajie viewpoints for about two hours.
4. Take the mountain shuttle toward Tianzi Mountain. The ride itself may take about 20 minutes, but waiting and transfers extend the real time.
5. Spend 60–90 minutes at the main Tianzi Mountain viewpoints.
6. Descend on the Tianzi Mountain Cableway. Add Ten-Mile Gallery only if the last shuttle and your energy level allow it.
7. Return to the East Gate before the final internal transport.

Allow eight to nine hours including queues and transfers. The route covers the headline views but omits most of Golden Whip Stream, Yangjiajie and Huangshi Village.

Two-Day Route: Mountain Views Plus the Valley

Two days let you separate high viewpoints from the lower forest instead of repeating the same transport.

Day 1 — Mountain circuit from the East Gate:

• East Gate → Bailong Elevator → Yuanjiajie → optional short Yangjiajie detour → Tianzi Mountain → Tianzi Mountain Cableway → East Gate.
• Give Yuanjiajie the longest stop. Add Yangjiajie only when routes are open, visibility is good and you still have at least two spare hours.

Day 2 — Valley route from the South Gate:

• South Gate → Golden Whip Stream → Water Winding Around Four Gates → shuttle toward the East Gate.
• Walk only the section that suits your energy. A shorter out-and-back route from the South Gate is better for travelers who do not want a long transfer at the end.

The East–South scenic ring bus, launched in 2025, makes one-way gate planning easier, but schedules can be adjusted for demand.^[4] Confirm the last departure locally. If heavy fog is forecast for Day 1, reverse the two days.

A Lower-Walking Route for Families and Limited Mobility

A lower-walking route uses the East Gate, Bailong Elevator, mountain shuttles, Tianzi Mountain Cableway and the Ten-Mile Gallery train. Limit Yuanjiajie to its core viewpoints, skip Yangjiajie and replace the long Golden Whip Stream walk with a short flat section.

This reduces distance but does not make the park fully accessible. Visitors still face queues, uneven paving, some steps and gaps between shuttle stops and viewpoints. Wheelchairs and strollers work only on selected sections. Ask the visitor center about the current accessible route before entering, and avoid promising a full circuit to anyone who cannot manage steps.

If time disappears, cut Huangshi Village first, then Yangjiajie and Ten-Mile Gallery. Preserve Yuanjiajie, Tianzi Mountain and at least one valley experience when possible.

Wulingyuan Town vs Downtown Zhangjiajie

Stay in Wulingyuan Town when the forest park is your priority. The East Gate can be walkable from many hotels, and two consecutive park days do not require a repeated 45-minute road transfer. Food and basic visitor services are concentrated around the town.

Stay downtown when Tianmen Mountain, DYG airport or an early Zhangjiajie West train is more important. When to Visit and How Weather Changes the Plan

Spring and autumn are the strongest overall periods, but no month guarantees clear peaks. Avoid building a trip around one exact photograph: cloud and mist are part of Wulingyuan’s landscape, yet dense fog can erase the panoramic views.

What to Do When the Peaks Are Hidden by Fog

Start with Golden Whip Stream or Ten-Mile Gallery, where forest and water still work in low visibility. Recheck the live weather around midday before paying for an elevator or cableway to the top. Light rain can create excellent cloud effects, but thunderstorms, ice and high winds can stop equipment. With two days, keep the route order flexible rather than reserving one unchangeable mountain day.

Practical Tips Inside the Park

• Confirm the destination before boarding: Eco-shuttle routes branch. Show the Chinese name of your next stop to staff instead of assuming every bus goes to the same hub.
• Budget for waiting: A ride lasting a few minutes can consume an hour once walking, queues and transfers are included. Summer and national holidays need the largest buffer.
• Check final transport: Gate, shuttle, cableway and elevator hours vary by season and temporary operations. Photograph the day’s last-service board after entering.
• Carry a modest lunch: Food and drinks are sold near major stops, but selection is limited and prices are higher than in Wulingyuan Town. Do not carry more water than you can comfortably walk with.
• Keep food hidden around macaques: Do not feed them or hold food in an exposed plastic bag. Step away rather than trying to retrieve food from an animal.
• Travel light: Leave large luggage at your hotel or confirm storage at the gate before arrival. Do not assume every entrance has the same storage hours.
• Wear shoes with grip: Stone paths become slippery after rain, and mountain weather can be cooler than Wulingyuan Town.
• Use digital payment but keep a backup: Alipay and WeChat Pay are common, but a small amount of cash is useful if a foreign card or mobile connection fails.

No. Wulingyuan’s core scenic area is in Wulingyuan District, while Tianmen Mountain is beside downtown Zhangjiajie in Yongding District. They require separate tickets and each needs substantial time. Do not combine them in one sightseeing day.

Is One Day Enough for Zhangjiajie National Forest Park?
