About Zhangjiajie

Zhangjiajie, formerly known as “Dayong,” is a key city in Hunan Province and one of China’s most important tourist destinations.

As a vital ecological zone, it acts as a major ecological barrier in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River.

The city consists of two districts and two counties: Yongding District, Wulingyuan District, Cili County, and Sangzhi County, covering a total area of 9,533 square kilometers.

Zhangjiajie is located in the northwestern part of Hunan Province, in the heart of the Wuling Mountain area, and holds historical significance as the origin of the Hunan-Guizhou revolution base.

Known for its picturesque landscapes, Zhangjiajie was recognized as the “World Natural Heritage Site” by UNESCO in 1992.

It is a prominent part of China’s tourism development, often hailed as a “magnified bonsai, a miniature fairyland.”

If you want help choosing routes, trip length, and the best places to combine on a first visit, see our Zhangjiajie Travel Guide.

By 2024, the city had established a four-level protection system for its ICH, including national, provincial, municipal, and county levels.

There are five national-level ICH projects, such as Tujia brocade weaving techniques and Zhangjiajie Yang opera.

The city’s cultural tourism initiatives have integrated ICH into the visitor experience, with immersive activities like traditional dance and craft workshops.

In 2024, ICH-related tourism contributed 18% of the city’s total tourism revenue, with digital technologies and international exchanges further promoting its global influence.

Zhangjiajie continues to develop its ICH industries, targeting a 4-billion-yuan output by 2026.

FAQs About Zhangjiajie

Is Avatar based off of Zhangjiajie?
Yes, the floating mountains in the 2009 movie “Avatar” were inspired by the quartz sandstone peak forests of Zhangjiajie’s Wulingyuan Scenic Area. The “Hallelujah Mountain” in the film is based on the “Qian Kun Pillar” in Yuanjiajie, Zhangjiajie.
Absolutely! Zhangjiajie is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a global geological park with rare quartz sandstone peaks. It offers breathtaking natural landscapes, rich ethnic culture, and iconic spots like Tianmen Mountain and the Glass Bridge.
Climbing Zhangjiajie depends on the area you visit. For Wulingyuan Scenic Area, expect 2-3 days of hiking, with daily treks of 6-8 hours. For Tianmen Mountain, it’s a 3-4 hour hike or a 30-minute cable car ride.
  • Spring (April-May): Temperatures range from 15-25°C, with rhododendrons blooming, misty clouds surrounding the peaks, creating a fairyland atmosphere.

  • Autumn (September-October): Clear weather with cool temperatures (18-28°C) and vibrant mountain foliage, perfect for photography and hiking.

  • Avoid July-August: High temperatures and peak tourist crowds.

  • Winter (December-February): Some areas may be icy, limiting access, but the snow scenery is unique for deep exploration.

Mandarin is the main language spoken, with locals also using their ethnic languages, like Tujia and Miao. However, Mandarin is widely understood in tourist areas, making communication easy for visitors.
  • Spring and Autumn (April-May, September-October): Wear long-sleeve shirts and light jackets, with a portable raincoat for sudden showers in the mountains.

  • Summer (June-August): Opt for short sleeves, breathable, quick-drying clothes, a sun hat, sunglasses, and mosquito repellent.

  • Winter (December-February): Pack a down jacket, thermal clothing, and slip-resistant shoes, along with gloves and a scarf.

  • General Advice: For hiking, wear non-slip, lightweight hiking shoes or sports shoes. Avoid high heels and carry a waterproof backpack and folding umbrella due to unpredictable mountain weather.

Hi there!

Just a quick heads-up — a helpful user named Volker let me know that some of the non-English content on this site may not be accurate.

This site is a one-person project I run part-time. I research and publish all the content myself, and the translations are currently done by machine (Google Translate). Balancing accuracy and accessibility across multiple languages is a real challenge.

If you spot any errors, I recommend switching to the English version using the button at the bottom left. I’ll continue working to improve the translations over time.

I truly appreciate your understanding. And if you have any suggestions, feel free to leave a comment — it means a lot to me.
