Origin of the Name “Dalian”

The name “Dalian” originates from Dalian Bay and dates back to the late Qing Dynasty. In 1880, Li Hongzhang referenced “Dalian Bay” in a military port proposal. Some believe the name stems from the Russian word “Dalini,” meaning “distant,” assigned during Russian occupation. Under Japanese rule in 1905, it was officially called Dalian. After liberation, Dalian and Lushun were combined as Lüda City in 1949, and in 1981, the name was changed back to Dalian City.
