Seven calendar days are enough for a memorable first trip to China, but only if you limit the route. Beijing, Xi’an and Shanghai can fit into one week, although this is a fast itinerary with two consecutive transfer days. It suits active travelers who do not mind changing hotels. Families, older travelers and anyone who prefers a slower pace should choose Beijing and Shanghai instead.
The hardest part of planning one week in China is not choosing attractions. It is accounting for immigration, luggage, airport and railway transfers, attraction reservations and hotel check-in. An itinerary that looks comfortable on a map can become exhausting once those hidden hours are included.
The main plan below uses seven calendar days and six hotel nights, with an open-jaw international ticket into Bắc Kinh and out of Thượng Hải. It shows where the schedule is tight, then offers a lower-stress two-city alternative.
Seven calendar days do not provide seven full sightseeing days. Day 1 is an arrival and recovery day, while Day 7 must remain flexible for the international flight. On the three-city route, Days 2, 3 and 6 are full sightseeing days. Day 5 includes the Terracotta Army but ends with an airport transfer and flight. Day 4 is primarily a railway transfer with a half-day in Xi’an.
This plan works best for active independent travelers, history-focused visitors and people comfortable with early starts, long walks and light luggage. It is a poor fit for families with young children, travelers with limited mobility, or anyone who dislikes packing and checking in repeatedly.
If you are still deciding whether one week or a longer trip is right, compare this schedule with our guide to Nên ở Trung Quốc bao lâu?. MỘT 10-day China itinerary gives all three cities much more breathing room.
| Ngày | Điểm lưu trú | Kế hoạch chính | Intercity move | Ưu tiên đặt trước |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Bắc Kinh | Arrive, check in and take a short evening walk | Không cần | Beijing hotel |
| 2 | Bắc Kinh | Quảng trường Thiên An Môn, Tử Cấm Thành và Công viên Cảnh Sơn | Không cần | Tiananmen and Palace Museum reservations |
| 3 | Bắc Kinh | Chuyến đi trong ngày đến Vạn Lý Trường Thành Mộ Điền Dục | Không cần | Great Wall entry and transport |
| 4 | Bắc Kinh → Tây An | Morning train, City Wall and central Xi’an | Beijing West–Xi’an North train | High-speed rail ticket |
| 5 | Xi’an → Shanghai | Terracotta Army, airport transfer and flight | Xi’an–Shanghai flight | Museum entry and domestic flight |
| 6 | Thượng Hải | Yu Garden area, the Bund and Pudong | Không cần | Optional garden or observation deck |
| 7 | Thượng Hải | Flexible morning and international departure | Di chuyển ra sân bay | Chuyến bay quốc tế |
The six nights are divided into three nights in Beijing, one in Xi’an and two in Shanghai. Day 5 is the pressure point. If no practical evening flight is available, do not force the rest of the itinerary around a poor connection.
This itinerary depends on several conditions:
This is a route framework, not a fixed timetable. Recheck every flight, train, attraction policy and opening day for your actual travel dates.
Land at PEK or PKX, clear immigration, collect your luggage and travel to your hotel. From PEK, the Airport Express reaches Dongzhimen, where you can transfer to the metro or take a taxi to Dongcheng or Wangfujing. A practical airport-to-hotel estimate is about 45–70 minutes after leaving the terminal, depending on the transfer and traffic. From PKX, allow roughly 70–90 minutes to reach central Beijing by airport rail and metro.
Stay around Wangfujing, Qianmen or another well-connected part of Dongcheng. These areas work with the Day 2 route and reduce unnecessary cross-city travel. Our guide to where to stay in Beijing compares the main areas in more detail.
Keep the evening optional. Eat near the hotel, walk briefly around Wangfujing or Qianmen, then rest. Do not reserve the Tử Cấm Thành, Great Wall or another difficult-to-replace attraction for the arrival day. A late flight, immigration queue or baggage delay could make the reservation unusable.
Use this full day for Beijing’s central imperial axis. Start with the security and access process for Tiananmen Square, then enter the Palace Museum through the Meridian Gate. Foreign visitors may need to use the Tiananmen Square WeChat mini program or have another person complete the reservation because the web system may not accept international phone-number verification. Carry the original passport used for each reservation.[2]
The Palace Museum does not sell same-day tickets. As checked on August 11, 2026, tickets are released at 8 pm seven days before the visit, the museum is normally closed on Mondays except statutory holidays, and visitors must make a real-name reservation through an official channel. Entry is through the Meridian Gate using the original booking document.[1]
Allow about 2.5–3.5 hours for the central halls, with the Treasure Gallery or Gallery of Clocks as optional additions. Do not try to see every side hall. After leaving through the Gate of Divine Prowess, continue to nearby Jingshan Park for the hilltop view over the palace. Check Jingshan’s current entry instructions before the visit, as arrangements for foreign passport holders can change.
Finish with dinner around Qianmen or Dashilan. Do not add the Summer Palace: it sits in a different part of Beijing and would turn a coherent walking route into a rushed cross-city day.
Give Mutianyu a full day. From central Beijing, a direct tourist bus, prearranged car or ride-hailing trip is usually more practical than building a route from several local buses. Allow roughly 90–120 minutes each way, with extra time on weekends, holidays or poor-weather days.
At the site, choose a route that matches your fitness. A cable-car ascent and descent keeps the day manageable, while a cable car combined with the toboggan offers a more playful return where operating conditions permit. You do not need to walk every open watchtower to have a worthwhile visit. Mutianyu publishes current hours, ticket access and temporary safety closures on its official English site; weather-related notices can change the day’s plan at short notice.[3]
Aim to return to Beijing by early evening. If you still have energy, see the exterior lighting around the Bird’s Nest and Water Cube or have an unhurried dinner near the hotel. Do not combine Mutianyu with the Ming Tombs or Summer Palace on this itinerary.
Check out early and travel to Beijing West Railway Station. A departure between roughly 7 and 9 am leaves the best chance of reaching central Xi’an in time for an afternoon walk. Direct high-speed services commonly take about 4.5–5.5 hours, but the actual schedule must be checked for your date. Arrive at the station about an hour before departure to complete security and find the platform without rushing.
Foreign passengers can buy real-name tickets with a valid passport through the official 12306 English website or app. Train times, availability and station details should always be reconfirmed there.[4] Our separate guide explains how to buy China train tickets and passport verification without repeating that process here.
After arriving at Xi’an North Railway Station, take Metro Line 2 toward the walled city and leave the luggage at your hotel. Stay near Yongning Gate, the Bell Tower or another central Line 2 station; see our comparison of Nơi lưu trú tại Tây An.
Use the remaining afternoon for the City Wall, ideally around Yongning Gate. Cycling is optional and depends on weather, opening arrangements and your energy after the train. Continue to the Bell and Drum Tower area, then eat around the Muslim Quarter or a quieter nearby street. Save the Terracotta Army for Day 5.
Check out and leave your luggage at the hotel, or use a prearranged car that can carry it through the day. Leave early for the Emperor Qinshihuang’s Mausoleum Site Museum. From central Xi’an, road travel to the Terracotta Warriors complex often takes about 70–90 minutes, but traffic can lengthen the trip.
Concentrate on Pit 1, followed by Pits 2 and 3 and the main exhibition areas. Allow about 2.5–3 hours for this core visit. The official museum describes a broader ticketed site containing both the Terracotta Warriors Museum and Lishan Garden, with about 1.5 hours suggested for each and a shuttle connecting them.[5] On this compressed flight day, do not attempt both areas unless the flight and road conditions leave a safe buffer.
Finish the museum visit by early afternoon and travel toward Xi’an Xianyang International Airport (XIY). If your luggage remains downtown, include the return journey before the airport transfer; this can add substantial time. A car carrying your bags from the start is more efficient but costs more.
Choose an evening flight that reaches Shanghai at a reasonable hour. SHA is more convenient for central Shanghai, but schedule reliability and a sensible departure time matter more than the airport code. If comparable flights are available, SHA is the easier arrival. Otherwise, PVG is workable with a longer transfer. If no suitable flight exists, the three-city itinerary needs to change rather than ending Day 5 after midnight.
Begin around Yu Garden and the Old City. The surrounding bridges, lanes and shopping streets can be explored without treating every commercial stop as essential. If you want to enter the classical garden itself, check its current opening and ticket arrangements. Seasonal festivals and evening programs can change access.
After lunch, move toward East Nanjing Road and walk to Bến Thượng Hải. This sequence changes the city story naturally: traditional garden design and the old city, the Bund’s historic commercial architecture, then the towers of modern Pudong across the Huangpu River.
Cross to Lujiazui by metro or ferry near sunset. Choose one observation deck only if visibility is good and you want the elevated view; otherwise, the waterfront is enough. Return to the Bund side after dark if you want the classic skyline view. Do not add Shanghai Disneyland, Suzhou or another full-day destination to Shanghai’s only complete sightseeing day.
Match the morning to the flight. For a departure before 11 am, check out and go directly to the airport. With a midday flight, breakfast and a short walk near the hotel are safer than crossing the city. A late flight can support a few hours around Wukang Road, Nanjing Road or a nearby waterfront, but avoid any attraction with a timed reservation or a long queue.
Confirm the airport carefully. Hongqiao is about 13 kilometers from central Shanghai, and an official city guide estimates roughly 30 minutes by taxi in normal traffic. Pudong is about 30 kilometers from downtown; Metro Line 2 takes about one hour from the airport to People’s Square, before adding the walk, waiting time and terminal procedures.[6] Leave a larger buffer for PVG and for all international flights.
| Chặng | Phương tiện khuyến nghị | Lý do | Real planning cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beijing–Xi’an | Tàu cao tốc | Frequent services, city-side stations and simple luggage handling | Roughly 6–7 hours door to door after hotel, station and arrival transfers |
| Xi’an–Shanghai | Evening flight | A daytime train would consume most of Day 5 | Flight time is only one part; include museum transfer, airport procedures and Shanghai arrival transport |
The train is the stronger choice for Beijing–Xi’an, but the Hướng dẫn đường sắt cao tốc Trung Quốc should be used for general railway planning rather than assuming one fixed departure. For Xi’an–Shanghai, compare the whole day, not just the advertised flight or train duration. Weather and air-traffic delays make an evening flight less predictable, so never connect it tightly to a separate international ticket.
Use this order:
Enter every traveler’s name exactly as shown in the passport. Recheck the official attraction pages before booking because release times, accepted platforms and closure arrangements can change.
| Thành phố | Practical area | Vì sao lịch trình này hiệu quả |
|---|---|---|
| Bắc Kinh | Wangfujing, Qianmen or central Dongcheng | Good access to the Day 2 route and central metro lines |
| Tây An | Yongning Gate or Bell Tower area | Near the City Wall and Line 2 from Xi’an North |
| Thượng Hải | People’s Square, the Bund side of Huangpu or nearby | Useful for Day 6 and for airport metro connections |
Pack for repeated transfers rather than for every possible situation. One manageable suitcase per person is a practical ceiling, not a baggage rule.
For seven days and six nights, a rough per-person planning range is US$450–700 for an economy trip, US$750–1,200 for a comfortable mid-range trip, and US$1,400 or more for higher-end hotels and transport. These estimates assume two people sharing a room and exclude international airfare. Solo rooms, peak holidays, premium domestic flights and private cars can raise the total. Use the full cost of travel in China breakdown before setting a final budget.
Travelers with children, older adults or a strong preference for unhurried days should remove Xi’an and divide the six nights between Beijing and Shanghai.
| Ngày | Kế hoạch |
|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive in Beijing and rest |
| 2 | Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City and Jingshan |
| 3 | Vạn Lý Trường Thành Mộ Điền Dục |
| 4 | Temple of Heaven or hutongs, then an afternoon or evening train from Beijing South to Shanghai Hongqiao |
| 5 | Yu Garden area, the Bund and Pudong |
| 6 | Shanghai neighborhoods, museums or a carefully selected day trip |
| 7 | Flexible Shanghai morning and departure |
This route changes hotels only once and avoids Day 5’s museum-to-airport pressure. It also creates room for weather changes and slower mornings. The trade-off is clear: you will not see the Terracotta Army. If that site is a top priority, keep Xi’an and accept the faster pace—or extend the trip.
Beijing, Xi’an and Shanghai can fit into seven calendar days, but the result is a fast highlights trip rather than a relaxed holiday. Choose it when the Terracotta Army and three contrasting cities matter more than slow mornings. Choose Beijing and Shanghai when comfort, flexibility and fewer hotel changes matter more. The best one-week itinerary is the one that respects your usable time, not the one with the longest list of stops.
Beijing to Shanghai gives the trip a clear progression from imperial history to modern China and matches this schedule. The reverse direction is also possible if international flights or domestic transport work better. The distance is the same; rebuild the daily order and recheck every timed booking rather than simply reading the itinerary backward.
Yes, but not with the same sightseeing balance. A Xi’an–Shanghai high-speed train takes much of a day once station transfers are included. You would need to shorten Xi’an or Shanghai, use an overnight sleeper where suitable, or switch to the Beijing–Shanghai two-city plan.
The three-city version is demanding because it combines long walks, the Great Wall, two transfer days and three hotels. Some active families and older travelers can manage it, but the Beijing–Shanghai alternative is safer for anyone who needs rest time, shorter days or fewer luggage moves.
Not as a fourth stop. Each requires another flight or long train journey and deserves more than a rushed visit. Replace Xi’an or Shanghai if one of those destinations matters more, or extend the trip to at least ten days.
The route is still possible, but it becomes less efficient. You must return to the original city by train or domestic flight, which removes time from Shanghai or creates another risky connection. For seven days, a two-city route or an open-jaw international ticket is usually the better solution.
The fast route uses three nights in Beijing, one in Xi’an and two in Shanghai. The slower route uses three nights in Beijing and three in Shanghai. With ten days, four nights in Beijing, two in Xi’an and three in Shanghai creates a more balanced version, with the remaining calendar day used for arrival, departure or a transfer.
