Quick Answer: Where Should You Stay in Xi’an?

For most first-time visitors, the safest overall choice is still the Bell Tower / Drum Tower / Muslim Quarter core. For a calmer but still very efficient old-city stay, Yongningmen usually works better. For newer hotels and easier modern-city convenience, Xiaozhai or the Dayan Pagoda / Qujiang side is often the better fit. Only prioritize Xi’an North Railway Station if this is mainly a train stopover.

  • Best overall for first-time visitors: Bell Tower / Drum Tower / Muslim Quarter core
  • Best for classic old-city sightseeing: Bell Tower core or Yongningmen
  • Best for quieter comfort and modern convenience: Xiaozhai or Dayan Pagoda / Qujiang
  • Best for night views and evening walks: Yongningmen or the Dayan Pagoda / Datang Everbright City side
  • Best for stopovers only: Xi’an North Railway Station area
  • Do not stay far out just because it is cheaper: area logic usually matters more than small hotel score differences

Xi’an is not the kind of city where booking any “hotel near the center” is good enough. Staying inside or outside the city wall, and how easily you can move between sightseeing, meals, and transport, changes the trip a lot.

How We Chose the Hotels in This Guide

This guide is designed to help you stay in the right part of Xi’an, not to push random hotel names.

  • No sponsored placements or paid recommendations are included in this guide.
  • Hotel choices are based mainly on real guest ratings and reviews from major Chinese booking platforms.
  • Area fit matters more than tiny review-score differences, because staying in the right part of Xi’an usually matters more than picking a hotel that is 0.1 points higher.
  • We looked for repeated praise and repeated complaints, especially around noise, luggage access, cleanliness, room condition, breakfast, and transport convenience.
  • Hotels were chosen for actual travel usefulness, not just star level, polished photos, or brochure appeal.

How to Think About Where to Stay in Xi’an

  • Start with one question: is your trip mainly built around the old city core. If yes, area choice matters more than almost anything else.
  • Do not treat “staying in the center” as one single experience. Bell Tower is denser, louder, and more tourist-heavy, while Yongningmen is calmer and more balanced.
  • For a first trip, prioritize the area with the best overall efficiency. For most readers, that still means the Bell Tower core or Yongningmen.
  • Old-city areas give you better atmosphere and easier night walks, but hotel hardware, room size, and noise control are often less reliable than in newer districts.
  • If you want a newer room, easier shopping, and smoother daily comfort, you do not have to force yourself to stay at Bell Tower. Xiaozhai often works better.
  • If the hotel is mainly for sleeping, transport logic should come first. In that case, Xi’an North Railway Station or a highly connected metro area can be smarter than chasing atmosphere.
  • On a 2–3 day trip, the wrong area can clearly reduce what you actually get done.
  • Area choice usually matters more than small hotel score differences. A slightly lower-rated hotel in the right zone is often the better choice.

Where Not to Stay in Xi’an for Most Tourists

  • Too-far outer districts are usually a weak match for a first trip. They may be cheaper or newer, but they often cost too much time once you start moving between the old city, Dayan Pagoda, and the main sightseeing core.
  • Pure business or newer office-heavy areas can work well for work trips, but they are usually not the best sightseeing bases. You may get a better room, but less atmosphere and weaker day-to-day route efficiency.
  • Cheap areas far from the old city core are often false economy. The room rate may look good at first, but the extra metro time, taxi cost, and route friction can easily cancel out the savings.
  • Old-lane stays with poor luggage access are often less practical than they sound.
  • Xi’an North Railway Station is useful for a one-night stopover, but it is usually the wrong choice for a multi-day sightseeing base.
  • The point is not that these places are bad. They simply do not match what most first-time visitors need most: smoother sightseeing, easier evenings, and better overall route efficiency.

Hotel Types in Xi’an: What to Expect

Around Bell Tower, Drum Tower, and Muslim Quarter, the hotel mix is the widest. You will find landmark old-city hotels, practical chain stays, smarter upper-mid city hotels, and some stronger branded options. This is the easiest zone for first-time visitors, but it also carries the clearest core-location premium.

Around Yongningmen and South Gate, the pattern is more balanced. Hotels here are often quieter and more comfortable than in the Bell Tower core, while still keeping strong access to the city wall, metro, and old-city sightseeing. This is usually one of the safest comfort-versus-atmosphere compromises.

In Xiaozhai, the stay style becomes more modern and functional. This area is stronger for newer chain hotels, city convenience, shopping, and practical value. It usually feels easier and more comfortable, but less distinctly old Xi’an.

In Dayan Pagoda and Qujiang, the hotel stock shifts toward newer upper-mid and higher-end stays. Comfort, design, and night-scene value are often stronger here, but so are scenic-zone pricing and crowd pressure.

Near Xi’an North Railway Station, hotel supply is mainly functional. It works well for one night and train timing, but poorly as a sightseeing base.

As for homestays, Xi’an does have them, but for most first-time visitors, a well-located hotel is still the safer and more practical default.

How Much Should You Budget for Staying in Xi’an?

Budget levelTypical nightly rangeWhat to expectBest-fit areas
BudgetRMB 150–350Basic but usable rooms, usually in budget chains or simpler local hotels. Expect smaller spaces, more limited soundproofing, and fewer extras, but still workable for short stays.Bell Tower budget stays, Xiaozhai budget chains, near Xi’an North Railway Station
Mid-rangeRMB 350–600The sweet spot for most travelers: better location, more reliable comfort, cleaner rooms, and usually a more stable overall stay experience.Yongningmen, Xiaozhai, Bell Tower core, some Dayan Pagoda options
Upper-mid / ComfortRMB 600–1,000Better hardware, stronger service, more polished rooms, and sometimes better views or more design-led properties.Yongningmen, Dayan Pagoda / Qujiang, better Bell Tower hotels
LuxuryRMB 1,000+Premium brands, stronger service, landmark locations or scarce scenic views, and a smoother overall stay.Dayan Pagoda / Qujiang, top Bell Tower stays, select Yongningmen hotels

Xi’an is usually cheaper than Hangzhou, but core old-city areas and major holiday periods can still push prices up quickly. The real price gap usually comes from area, season, and whether you are paying for a core old-city location or scarce landmark views. Weekends, summer, national holidays, and the busiest old-city or Dayan Pagoda zones can raise prices sharply. For most travelers, a mid-range budget is already enough for a well-located and comfortable stay. For a broader travel spending benchmark, see Cost to Travel in China.

Practical Tips for Choosing Where to Stay in Xi’an

  • Lock the area first, then compare hotels inside that area.
  • Do not rely on “a few hundred meters from Bell Tower” or “near Muslim Quarter” as a shortcut. That can still mean a noisy street or a weaker walking route.
  • In old-city areas, pay close attention to luggage access and noise.
  • If you want to stay near the city wall, check which gate you are actually booking near. Yongningmen usually works best for most travelers.
  • Staying near Xi’an North Railway Station is fine for one-night transit. It is much less convincing if your trip is really about sightseeing.
  • Night views, evening walks, breakfast options, and dinner convenience all change the real value of a hotel.
  • Book earlier in peak periods. Summer, national holidays, and the busiest old-city dates can raise rates quickly.
  • Families should check more than room size. Walking comfort, nearby food, and easy returns after sightseeing matter a lot.
  • Transport convenience is not only about being near a metro station. It also matters whether the route works well for Bell Tower, Dayan Pagoda, Terracotta Army transfer points, and Xi’an North Railway Station.
  • Read the latest reviews carefully. Noise, cleanliness, facility maintenance, air conditioning, and hot water often matter more than polished listing photos.
  • It also helps to review broader China Travel Tips before locking in your stay.

FAQs About Where to Stay in Xi’an

Where is the best area to stay in Xi’an for first-time visitors?

For most first-time visitors, the best area is still the Bell Tower / Drum Tower / Muslim Quarter core. It gives you the easiest access to classic old-city sights, busy evening streets, food, and metro connections. It is not the quietest part of Xi’an, but it is the area where most travelers are least likely to choose wrong.

For most leisure travelers, staying inside the city wall or right next to it works better. You stay closer to the most classic Xi’an atmosphere and can reach major old-city sights more easily. Staying outside the wall can still be a good choice if you pick somewhere like Yongningmen or Xiaozhai, but the farther out you go, the less practical it usually becomes for short sightseeing trips.

Yes, it is one of the best areas to stay in Xi’an, especially for first-time visitors. It works well because it combines strong sightseeing efficiency, easy food access, and a very active evening atmosphere. The tradeoff is that it can be crowded, noisy, and more commercial than some travelers expect.

Stay near Muslim Quarter if you want food, night energy, and easy access to the old-city core. It is a strong choice for short stays and first-time trips built around classic Xi’an highlights. It is less ideal if you are sensitive to noise, dislike heavy crowds, or want a calmer hotel environment.

Yes, Xiaozhai is a very good area for tourists who care more about practical comfort than old-city atmosphere. It has strong metro access, plenty of food, newer hotels, and good links to places like Shaanxi History Museum and Dayan Pagoda. It is a smarter choice than many people expect, but it does not feel as traditionally Xi’an as the Bell Tower side.

For one night, the right answer depends on the purpose of the stay. If you want one short sightseeing-heavy stop, Bell Tower or Yongningmen usually makes the most sense. If it is mainly a rail stopover, staying near Xi’an North Railway Station is often the better decision.

Yes, but mainly for transit. They are worth it if you arrive late, leave early, or only need a practical overnight stop. They are much less attractive as a real sightseeing base, because the area is functional rather than atmospheric and puts you farther from the classic parts of Xi’an most visitors came to see.

Xi’an is often more affordable than cities like Hangzhou, but prices still rise quickly in core tourist zones and holiday periods. Budget hotels often start around RMB 150–350, solid mid-range choices usually fall around RMB 350–600, and more comfortable upper-mid options often run from RMB 600–1,000. Landmark-area or premium-view hotels can go much higher.

For most visitors, the most convenient sightseeing area is still the Bell Tower core, with Yongningmen as the strongest calmer alternative. Bell Tower gives you the easiest access to the old city, food streets, and classic first-trip movement. Yongningmen works better if you want a more balanced stay and easier evening walks.
