In This Guide

Quick Answer: Where Should You Stay in Xiamen?

For most first-time visitors, the safest overall choice is still the Zhongshan Road / Ferry Terminal / Bashi / central Siming core. It gives you the strongest all-around balance of Gulangyu access, old-city sightseeing, food, and evening walks. Other areas can work well, but usually only when you clearly prioritize beach leisure, quieter comfort, or pure rail or airport convenience.

  • Best overall for first-time visitors: Zhongshan Road / Ferry Terminal / Bashi / central Siming core
  • Best for classic Xiamen atmosphere: Zhongshan Road / Bashi / old-core seafront side
  • Best for Gulangyu and old-core sightseeing efficiency: Ferry Terminal / Zhongshan Road
  • Best for seaside walks and vacation feel: Zengcuoan / Huandao Road
  • Best for quieter comfort: the outer Siming South Road side / around Xiamen University / parts of Hubin East Road
  • Best for rail or airport convenience only when the transit logic is real: Xiamen Railway Station area or the Gaoqi Airport side
  • Do not stay too far out just because it is cheaper: area logic usually matters more than small score differences

In Xiamen, where you stay matters more than picking the highest-rated hotel first. Xiamen is not the kind of city where any “hotel near downtown” or “hotel near the beach” is good enough. Staying around Zhongshan Road, the ferry side, Xiamen University, Shapowei, Zengcuoan, the railway-station area, or the airport side can lead to very different trip experiences.

The real difference comes from Gulangyu access, old-core sightseeing flow, food access, evening walks, beach convenience, and whether the area works for sightseeing or only for transit. This guide helps readers decide where to stay first, which area fits which travel style, and which hotels are worth prioritizing in each key area.

How We Chose the Hotels in This Guide

This guide is built to help readers choose the right area first, then shortlist hotels that work well in real trips.

  • No sponsored placements or paid recommendations

  • Based mainly on real guest ratings and reviews from major Chinese booking platforms

  • Area fit matters more than tiny review-score differences

  • We looked for repeated praise and repeated complaints, not just polished listing photos

  • Hotels were chosen for actual travel usefulness, not just star level or brochure appeal

  • In Xiamen, repeated comments about ferry access, old-building tradeoffs, dampness, street noise, breakfast value, and nearby food convenience matter a lot

Best Areas to Stay in Xiamen

Zhongshan Road / Ferry Terminal / Bashi / Central Siming Core

Xiamen Zhongshan Road Street View Historic arcade street with colonial architecture red lantern decorations and lively shopping atmosphere - Where to Stay in Xiamen: Best Areas & Hotels 2026 - The China Journey
Xiamen Zhongshan Road Street View

This is still the safest all-around base for most first-time visitors. Its biggest value is the strongest balance of Gulangyu boarding convenience, old-core sightseeing, food access, and evening activity.

It works best for first-time visitors and short stays. It has more travel atmosphere than the railway-station side and better first-trip efficiency than Zengcuoan. The tradeoff is that it is not the quietest or cheapest area, and some older buildings can feel busier or more humid than newer city hotels.

Siming South Road / Xiamen University / Shapowei Side

Xiamen University - Where to Stay in Xiamen: Best Areas & Hotels 2026 - The China Journey
Xiamen University

This side works better for travelers who care more about city walks, atmosphere, and landmark-adjacent sightseeing than about pure ferry efficiency. Its biggest value is that Xiamen University, Shapowei, Nanputuo, and nearby seaside routes fit together more naturally here.

It works best for couples, first-time visitors, and readers who want a stronger city-feel stay. Evening atmosphere is stronger here than in many practical city zones, but it is not always better than the ferry side for Gulangyu efficiency. Some hotels also carry scenic or trendy-area premiums, and parts of the district feel busier and more tourist-heavy than they first look.

Zengcuoan / Huandao Road / Seaside Leisure Belt

Zengcuo’an Fishing Village, Xiamen – Colorful coastal village streets filled with cafes, guesthouses, and local shops, blending seaside culture with youthful travel vibes - Where to Stay in Xiamen: Best Areas & Hotels 2026 - The China Journey
Zengcuoan Fishing Village Xiamen

This side works better for travelers who care more about beach walks, photo-friendly scenery, and a slower vacation rhythm than about dense first-time sightseeing. Its biggest value is a more scenic and relaxed stay than the old core.

It works best for couples, slower travelers, and readers who want the seaside to feel like part of the stay. It is usually weaker than Zhongshan Road for Gulangyu and old-city efficiency, tourist density can be high, and hotel or homestay quality varies more than in the core city districts.

Huli / Xiamen Railway Station / Hubin East Road / Practical City Core

Xiamen Railway Station modern architecture at night - Where to Stay in Xiamen: Best Areas & Hotels 2026 - The China Journey
Xiamen Railway Station modern architecture at night

This side is more practical than atmospheric. Its biggest value is rail access, metro convenience, shopping, and stable everyday city logistics.

It works best for rail arrivals, business-leisure stays, and readers who want a steadier city base. It is weaker than Zhongshan Road for classic first-trip atmosphere and weaker than the seaside belt for vacation feel, so it makes more sense for practical short stays than for immersive travel.

Near Xiamen Gaoqi Airport

Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport terminal at sunset - Where to Stay in Xiamen: Best Areas & Hotels 2026 - The China Journey
Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport terminal at sunset

This is a pure airport-function zone. It only makes sense for late arrivals, early departures, or very short overnights. If the flight logic is not real, this area usually weakens the trip.

It works best for airport timing only. It is not a sightseeing base, and using it for normal city travel usually adds unnecessary transfers back into the parts of Xiamen most visitors actually want.

Recommended Hotels

Baina S Hotel(柏纳S酒店·厦门高崎国际机场店)

Hotel positioning: mid-range

Best for: late arrivals, early departures, readers who want the safest airport-side choice

Rating: 4.7/5

Price range: about RMB 600–1,200 per night

Pros: more polished setting; stronger room and environment quality; useful transfer support; better fit for travelers unwilling to stay somewhere too basic

Cons: expensive for a transit hotel; still not useful for normal sightseeing

Verdict: the best airport-area upgrade pick if you need comfort as well as airport access

Jimei / Xiamen North Railway Station Side

Xiamen Jimei District Sunset Skyline Coastal cityscape with traditional architecture and modern skyline glowing under colorful sunset sky - Where to Stay in Xiamen: Best Areas & Hotels 2026 - The China Journey
Xiamen Jimei District Sunset Skyline

This area only makes sense when the trip is clearly built around North Railway Station timing or a real Jimei-focused plan. For most first-time Xiamen trips, it is a weak base.

It works best for high-speed-rail arrivals, departures, or readers who specifically want Jimei. It is much weaker for Gulangyu, the old core, Xiamen University, and the city’s classic first-trip line, so it is only worth using when clearly needed.

Recommended Hotels

Mehood Hotel(美豪君悦酒店·厦门北站店)

Hotel positioning: mid-range

Best for: HSR stopovers, readers who want the safest all-around North Railway Station pick

Rating: 4.9/5

Price range: about RMB 300–500 per night

Pros: very strong recent ratings; useful station support; good value; easier one-night decision than many transit options

Cons: weak fit for island sightseeing; only makes sense when north-station logic is real

Verdict: the safest practical pick here for a north-station-led stay

Shanxun Qishu Jinyuan Hotel(厦门山寻·崎墅锦院酒店·厦门北站工学院店)

Hotel positioning: mid-range

Best for: quieter stopovers, readers who want more design feel near the north-station side

Rating: 4.9/5

Price range: about RMB 350–600 per night

Pros: stronger design character; quieter atmosphere; useful for travelers who dislike plain transit hotels; good recent cleanliness feedback

Cons: surroundings are less convenient than island-core districts; weaker tourism value

Verdict: a good upgrade choice if you want north-station practicality with a calmer stay feel

Jinjiang Metropolo Hotel(锦江之星品尚酒店·厦门机场T4集美学村店)

Hotel positioning: mid-range

Best for: readers who want a more recognizable chain option with practical regional access

Rating: 4.7/5

Price range: about RMB 300–500 per night

Pros: stable chain logic; useful if you need Jimei plus transport convenience; more straightforward than many smaller local stays

Cons: still not a strong base for classic island sightseeing; location logic is niche

Verdict: a sensible practical pick if your trip is truly built around Jimei or north-side transport needs

Backup option: Wyndham Grand Plaza Royale Yuzhou Xiamen(厦门集美温德姆至尊豪廷大酒店) works for readers who want a more upscale Jimei-side stay and do not mind being far from the island core.

How to Think About Where to Stay in Xiamen

  • Start by deciding whether your trip is mainly built around Gulangyu and the old core, or around beach time and a slower coastal stay. That choice usually matters more than the hotel score.

  • Do not treat “staying in Xiamen” as one single experience. Zhongshan Road, Shapowei, Zengcuoan, the railway-station side, and the airport side solve very different needs.

  • Choose Zhongshan Road / Ferry / Bashi when you want the strongest first-trip efficiency for Gulangyu, old-core sightseeing, food, and evening walks.

  • Choose Xiamen University / Shapowei when city walks, atmosphere, and a more local-feeling sightseeing rhythm matter more than pure ferry convenience.

  • Choose Zengcuoan / Huandao Road when beach leisure, seaside walks, and a slower vacation feel matter more than dense classic sightseeing.

  • Treat the railway-station / Hubin East side as a practical base, not an atmospheric one. It works better for short stays, rail access, and easy city logistics.

  • Treat the airport side as function only. It works for late arrivals, early departures, and little else.

  • If you stay only 1–2 nights, the wrong area can clearly reduce efficiency, especially if you spend too much time crossing the city for ferries, beaches, or old-core sights.

  • If you want both Gulangyu and beach leisure, decide which one is the base and which one becomes a day trip. Trying to split every day between both usually weakens the trip.

  • Area choice usually matters more than a tiny review-score difference. A slightly lower-rated hotel in the right district is often the better stay.

Where Not to Stay in Xiamen for Most Tourists

  • Avoid too-far outer districts just because they look cheaper. They usually weaken ferry access, old-city sightseeing flow, and evening walking value.

  • Be careful with cheap suburban stays that save money on paper but cost extra time in taxis, metro transfers, and back-and-forth movement.

  • Do not use the airport side as a multi-day base. It only makes sense for real flight timing, not for normal Xiamen sightseeing.

  • Be cautious with north-side or high-speed-rail-side areas as old-core sightseeing bases. They can work for transport logic, but they are usually weak for Gulangyu, Zhongshan Road, and the city’s classic first-trip line.

  • Cheap older stays repeatedly criticized for dampness, noise, poor maintenance, weak soundproofing, or bad location are often false savings in Xiamen, especially in older parts of the city.

  • Areas that seem cheaper but make the ferry, old-city sights, and evening walks less convenient are usually the wrong trade for a short trip.

  • The problem is not that these places are bad. They just do not match what most first-time Xiamen visitors actually need: smoother Gulangyu access, better old-core sightseeing, easier evenings, and stronger overall trip flow.

How Much Should You Budget for Staying in Xiamen?

Budget level

Typical nightly range

What to expect

Best-fit areas

Budget

RMB 180–350

Basic but workable rooms, usually in simpler chains or modest local stays. Expect smaller spaces, fewer extras, and more tradeoffs on view, building age, or exact location.

Huli / Xiamen Railway Station side, some edge-of-core stays, selected budget options outside the hottest seaside blocks

Mid-range

RMB 350–650

The sweet spot for most travelers: better location, cleaner rooms, more stable service, and a much easier overall stay.

Zhongshan Road / Ferry side, Xiamen University / Shapowei side, selected Zengcuoan stays, stronger practical city-core hotels

Upper-mid / Comfort

RMB 650–1,000

Better hardware, more polished rooms, stronger branding, and sometimes partial sea views or a more distinctive stay feel.

Better Zhongshan Road hotels, stronger Shapowei / Xiamen University picks, selected Huandao Road stays

Luxury

RMB 1,000+

Top-brand hotels, better views, stronger service, and the best chance of meaningful sea-view or landmark-location stays.

Prime Siming core, top Xiamen University / Shapowei stays, stronger seaside hotels

Xiamen is usually more affordable than China’s top-tier cities, but it is not especially cheap in the hottest areas. The real gap usually comes from area, season, sea-view value, old-core location, and branding. Weekends, holidays, summer, and popular seaside dates can raise prices clearly. For most travelers, a mid-range budget is already enough for a well-located and comfortable stay. Sea-view rooms and other high-demand scenic categories often carry a noticeable premium.

For a broader travel spending benchmark, see Cost to Travel in China.

Practical Tips for Choosing Where to Stay in Xiamen

  • Lock the area first, then compare hotels inside it. In Xiamen, the right district usually matters more than a slightly higher score somewhere less useful.

  • Do not rely only on labels like “near Zhongshan Road” or “near the beach.” Those can still mean very different walking times, street conditions, and trip flow.

  • In the old core, check whether the building is older, whether rooms face a busy street, whether dampness comes up in reviews, and whether luggage access looks awkward.

  • For sea-view hotels or homestays, decide whether the view is really worth the premium. In many cases, location logic matters more than paying extra for a room you will use only at night.

  • Staying near the airport is fine for transit, but it is usually weak for sightseeing and everyday city experience.

  • Night walks, dinner access, breakfast convenience, and evening atmosphere directly affect stay value in Xiamen, especially on short trips.

  • Book early for weekends, holidays, summer peaks, and popular seaside dates. The better-value rooms disappear fast.

  • Families should check walking conditions and nearby food, not just ratings. A high score matters less if the daily route is awkward with children.

  • Transport convenience is not just about metro distance. It also matters whether the route to the ferry, the Gulangyu terminal, Xiamen University, Shapowei, and Zengcuoan is actually easy.

  • In recent reviews, focus on noise, dampness, cleanliness, maintenance, soundproofing, hot water, and parking. In Xiamen, those details often matter more than polished photos.

It also helps to review broader China Travel Tips before locking in your stay.

FAQs About Where to Stay in Xiamen

Where is the best area to stay in Xiamen for first-time visitors?

For most first-time visitors, the best area is still the Zhongshan Road / Ferry Terminal / Bashi / central Siming core. It gives you the strongest overall balance of Gulangyu access, old-core sightseeing, food, and evening activity. It is usually the least risky first base.

For most travelers, Zhongshan Road is the better all-around choice, while the Xiamen University side is better for atmosphere and city walks. Stay near Zhongshan Road if you want easier ferry access, stronger old-core efficiency, and a more practical first trip. Stay near Xiamen University if you care more about Shapowei, seaside walking, and a slower city-feel stay.

Yes, it is one of the best areas to stay in Xiamen. It works especially well for first-time visitors because it keeps Gulangyu, Bashi, and the old core easier to use. The tradeoff is that it can be busier, noisier, and slightly more expensive in the strongest locations.

Yes, if Gulangyu is a major part of your trip. Staying near the ferry side usually makes the logistics much easier, especially on a short itinerary. It is less important only if your trip is focused more on the beach side or on a slower stay away from the old core.

Yes, but mainly for travelers who want beach walks, a more relaxed rhythm, and a stronger vacation feel. It is much better for seaside leisure than for dense first-time sightseeing. It is usually a weaker base than Zhongshan Road if Gulangyu and old-core efficiency are the priority.

That depends on what the one night is for. If you want the most useful sightseeing base, stay near Zhongshan Road / Ferry / Bashi. If the goal is a beach-led overnight, Zengcuoan or Huandao Road can work better. If it is mainly about catching a flight or train, the practical transport zones make more sense.

Usually only when the flight logic is real. They can make sense for a very late arrival, an early departure, or an awkward overnight gap. For a normal Xiamen trip, they are usually the wrong base because they weaken sightseeing flow and everyday atmosphere.

It can be, especially for practical short stays. This area works well for rail access, shopping, metro convenience, and a more stable modern city stay. It is less attractive for first-time visitors who want the strongest old-core feeling or the most natural Gulangyu base.

A basic budget stay often starts around RMB 180–350, a solid mid-range hotel usually falls around RMB 350–650, and better comfort stays often run from RMB 650–1,000. Luxury stays start above that. Sea-view rooms, prime old-core locations, and peak travel dates can push prices up clearly.

For most visitors, the most convenient sightseeing area is still the Zhongshan Road / Ferry Terminal / Bashi / central Siming core. It gives you the best overall access to Gulangyu logistics, old-core walking, food, and evening atmosphere. Other areas can be better for beaches or a quieter stay, but they are usually less balanced for a first sightseeing-heavy trip.
